Alpha & Omega Semi Introduces DrMOS Power Module

June 07, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) introduced the AOZ5006, a 6 x 6mm power module that is fully compliant with Intel’s DrMOS specifications. The AOZ5006 integrates a dual gate driver and two optimized MOSFETs that together provide a high efficiency dc-dc synchronous buck power stage. The new device enables high power density voltage regulator solutions for servers, graphic cards and high-end desktop PC applications.

The AOZ5006 utilizes AOS’ proprietary state-of-the-art Trench MOSFET technology to achieve what the company says is an optimal balance between switching and conduction losses. At the same time, the product leverages AOS’ advanced packaging capability to further improve efficiency and thermal performance. The resulting efficiency is over 90% up to 21A of output current in a typical 12Vin to 1.2Vout dc-dc application switching at 300KHz.

"The AOZ5006 meets the ever increasing power density requirements of high-end computing applications by reducing the solution size by two-thirds compared to discrete solutions. In addition, the parasitic inductance between the driver and MOSFETs is minimized, allowing switching frequencies to 1MHz and faster dynamic response times," said Song Qu, Director of Product Marketing for Power IC Products at AOS.

The AOZ5006 works with a variety of analog and digital PWM controllers and is available in two options to support both 3.3 and 5V logic inputs. The AOZ5006 is housed in the 40-pin 6 x 6mm QFN package and is available immediately in production quantities. The unit price of 1,000 pieces is US$2.85.
