Absopulse Offers DC-DC Converter With Built-In RIA 12 Protection For Railway Applications

October 10, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Absopulse Electronics announced the new BAR 65, a recent addition to its series of rugged dc-dc converters designed for railway applications. This design meets the requirements of EN 50155 for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock and has the input voltage surge withstand capability to meet RIA 12 (3.5Vn for 20msec). The BAR 65 also meets EN 50121-3-2 (EMI and EMC) and EN 55022 Class B EMI, with wide margins. It features full electronic protection and 80% efficiency at full load, depending on input voltage.

The BAR 65 utilizes high frequency topology to deliver 300W at any dc-output voltage from 12 to 110V. Input voltage ranges include 72V (42 – 110Vdc), 96V (57 – 168Vdc) or 110Vdc (57 – 168Vdc). An optional built-in redundancy diode would allow for parallel connection to achieve higher output power or N+1 redundant operation. Other input and output voltages as well as a Form C output fail alarm are available on request.

Convection and conduction cooled, this converter performs to full specification at temperatures from -25 to +70°C. It is housed in a 5.2" x 2.46" x 11.4" vented chassis and has heavy ruggedizing and conformal coating for operation in harsh environments.

The BAR 65 is priced in the US$318 range at quantities of 100, depending on options.
