23% Thinner, 10μF Three-Terminal Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor
Taiyo Yuden Co., LTD. announced the launch of its 1005-size three-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitor A3K105BBJ106MR. The 10μF capacitor measures 1.0mm × 0.5mm × 0.5 mm, is rated at 4V. The company says that three-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, which have a lower ESL than the common two-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, can reduce impedance in the high-frequency range and improve the stability of ICs that are driven at high speed.
The product is intended to be used as a decoupling capacitor for power supply lines for ICs to meet the demand for smaller and thinner devices, such as IoT-related devices, typified by smartphones and wearable devices.
Taiyo Yuden reduced the thickness of the new ceramic capacitor by about 23% compared to its conventional product, A3K105KBJ106MV which has a thickness of 0.65mm. This reduced thickness contributes to the further reduction in the thickness of small and thin digital devices.
The company will begin producing of this multilayer ceramic capacitor at its Tamamura Plant starting from March 2019 at a production rate of 5 million units per month, with a sample price of 10 yen per unit.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors are positioned near ICs mounted in smartphones or wearable devices for decoupling. As devices increase their functionality, the speed of the ICs incorporated in them has also increased, requiring decoupling capacitors with a lower ESL placed around such ICs to ensure their stable operation.
Increasing the number of features in the same sized thin devices, which now sometimes use larger batteries, can require the incorporation of thinner components.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors tend to have a higher impedance and decline in performance in the high-frequency range, due to ESL influence. Three-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, which have a lower ESL than the popular two-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, have reduced impedance in the high-frequency range.
Taiyo Yuden says that the company achieved a reduction in thickness of about 23% compared to its conventional product using sophisticated materials technology and a sheet lamination technique.
