Vicor added the PI358x series to the company's 48V ZVS buck regulator portfolio. (See functional block diagram above). The PI358x series offers a new low-cost GQFN package option to the existing LGA and BGA system-in-package (SiP) products. Vicor designed the PI358x for applications leveraging higher voltage distribution, such as telecom, network infrastructure, data centers, industrial, batteries, and lighting.

A unique ZVS topology enables 48V direct-to-PoL without sacrificing performance. With step-down regulation from a higher voltage source, the ZVS buck regulator can deliver more efficient power distribution architectures, reduce I2R losses, and eliminate costly and inefficient intermediate conversion stages.

Operating from 30Vin to 60Vin, the PI358x series regulates an output voltage ranging from 2.2V to 14V and delivers an output current up to 10A. Using single wire current sharing without any additional components can further increase power delivery.

The company points out that a regulator is only as good as the power it can deliver in the environment in which it will be used. Vicor says its ZVS regulators deliver more power at higher temperatures compared to the competition.

Furthermore, the company asserts that the heart of any ZVS regulator is the zero voltage switching topology. According to Vicor, this topology in its ZVS regulators enables lower losses from higher input voltages, which translates to higher conversion efficiency than the competition.

The new 48V ZVS regulators come in three variants; PI3583-00-QFYZ, PI3585-00-QFYZ, and PI3586-00-QFYZ. All three come in the 7mm x 8mm GQFN package and have a 30V to 60V input voltage range. Their nominal output voltages are 3.3Vout, 5.0Vout, and 12Vout respectively, and they are rated for 10A, 10A, and 9A respectively.
