Top 10 Power Modules Products for 2015

January 05, 2016 by Power Pulse1595211359

The trends in power modules reflect larger trends in the overall industry including the growing adoption of silicon-carbide devices and the emergence of the Internet of things. Four of the top-10 modules include SiC devices including three in the top ten. Those three are offered by ROHM, Fuji Electric and jointly from Panasonic and Sansha. Rounding out the "top 5" are a module for IoT inverter applications from Infineon and a second module from Infineon that offers improved thermal performance. Vincotech was the only company besides Infineon to have two products in the Top 10 listing. Here are the Top 10 Power Modules for 2015 based on readership on PowerPulse

#1: 1200V / 300A SiC Power Module

ROHM has announced the development of a 1200V/300A full SiC power module designed for inverters and converters in solar power conditioners and industrial equipment. The 300A rated current makes the BSM300D12P2E001 suitable for high power applications such as large-capacity power supplies for industrial equipment. In addition, 77% lower switching loss vs. conventional IGBT modules enables high-frequency operation, contributing to smaller cooling countermeasures and peripheral components. more

#2: 100A / 1200V Silicon-Carbide Hybrid Module

Fuji Electric Corp. of America has announced the introduction of a new silicon-carbide hybrid module for the North American market, which allows for smaller, lighter system packages due to its higher switching speed and increased efficiency over full-silicon power modules. The new module, which is the latest generation product in the company's portfolio, began shipping to customers earlier this month and boasts temperature stability and virtually no reverse recovery loss. more

#3: SiC Module jointly-developed by Panasonic and Sansha

Panasonic Corporation and Sansha Electric Manufacturing Co., Ltd., which offers the SanRex brand, announced that they have developed a very compact SiC power module together with highly efficient operation of power switching systems. The SiC power module has sufficiently good reliability and greatly helps to reduce the size of power switching systems such as industrial inverters and power supplies. more

#4: Power Module Enables Reliable Inverter Designs in IoT Applications

At this year's PCIM 2015 trade show Infineon Technologies AG launched a new Intelligent Power Module (IPM). The MIPAQâ„¢ Pro provides an all-in-one solution for a wide spectrum of scalable and compact inverter designs to be implemented in wind, solar, and industrial drives applications. MIPAQ Pro is a fully qualified and tested IPM, integrating IGBTs, gate drivers, the heat sink, sensors, digital control electronics as well as digital bus communication in one robust and reliable device. The high performance subsystem provides high power density combined with a large safe operating area (SOA). Innovative features offer a new approach for protecting the IPM in addition to high modularity, increased design flexibility and security. more

#5: IGBT Modules have Improved Thermal and Power Cycling

At this year's PCIM 2015 trade show Infineon Technologies AG presented the latest generation of its PrimePACKâ„¢ power modules which benefit from the new generation of Infineon's IGBTs. The combination of the IGBT5 and the innovative .XT interconnection technology is an important milestone in IGBT chip and interconnection technologies. The IGBT5 allows for higher power density with reduced static and dynamic losses, whereas the .XT interconnection technology extends lifetime by increased thermal and power cycling capabilities. As a result, the new PrimePACK modules are claimed to be the best choice for the majority of high power inverters in applications like wind, solar and industrial drives. more

#6: Rectifier Dual-PFC and Inverter in One Module

Vincotech announced the release of its flowRPI 1 family, a new 3-in-1 solution that integrates three topologies into one flow1 housing. This module is designed for welding, charger and SMPS applications rated from 1.5 to 7 kW. The new flowRPI 1 family combines a rectifier with highly efficient low-voltage drop diodes, a two legs PFC featuring ultrafast 650V IGBTs and diodes, integrated filtering capacitors and diodes for current sensing via external transformer, and an inverter with H-bridge open emitter topology and optional capacitors into a single module that enables engineers to save design-in time and cost. more

#7: Co-Packaged SiC Transistor and Diodes in Mini-Modules

GeneSiC Semiconductor announces the immediate availability of a 20-mΩ 1200-V SiC junction transistor and diodes in an isolated, 4-leaded mini-module packaging that enables extremely low Turn-On energies losses while offering flexible, modular designs in high frequency power converters. The use of high frequency, high voltage and low on-resistance capable SiC transistors and rectifiers will reduce the size/weight/volume of electronics applications requiring higher power handling at high operating frequencies. These devices are targeted for use in a wide variety of applications including induction heaters, plasma generators, fast chargers, dc-dc converters, and switched mode power supplies. more

#8: Data Isolator Module Provides Data and Power Isolation

Murata announces the introduction of the NMUSB202MC, a surface mount powered data isolator module that provides dual-port USB data and power isolation from a single upstream port. When used in conjunction with a host controller, a single NMUSB202MC module counts as two USB hubs for cascaded applications and provides full 5V/500mA power to each downstream port. 250Vrms reinforced isolation provides safety, immunity to EMI, and elimination ground loops. more

#9: PFC Modules Handle 1kW to 6kW

Vincotech announced the release of flowPFC 0 CD modules. Engineered to optimize energy quality and consumption for welding, switched-mode power supplies and embedded drive applications rated from 1- to 6-kW, these power factor correction modules draw maximum power from the grid. more
