Start-up Carbice Corporation Receives $15 Million in Funding For its Heat-Conducting Technology

December 05, 2020 by Stephanie Leonida

Start-up company Carbice Corporation are provided with funding to grow production of its thermal management material

The Carbice Corporation manufactures advanced multi-functional materials for electronics, energy, and industrial products. The company offers a versatile thermal tape that allows electronic devices to stay cool by promoting the efficient spread of heat.

Recently, Carbice raised $15 million in a Series A funding round led by Downing Ventures. Additional funding was Toyota AI Ventures. These funds will be used to help Carbice grow its network to include talented individuals that can jump-start the expansion of its sales and marketing functions. The funds will also be used to scale up the production of its solutions to meet market demand.

Carbice was founded in 2017 by Dr. Baratunda Cola. Cola holds extensive experience in the field of carbon nanotubes and has been working in this area since 1999. He has since brought forward research and patented designs that have garnered him several awards. Dr. Cola Co-Founded the Heat Lab at Georgia Tech University and is an associate professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In a recent news release, Partner and Head of Ventures at Downing Ventures, Warren Rogers said, “Not only is Bara one of the greatest technical minds out there, he is invested in how people and the world operate to make this planet a better place for everyone which is clear when you experience their company culture. Carbice Carbon is nothing short of revolutionary and will completely disrupt thermal management in every industry. We look forward to being part of the journey with Bara and his team while building this transformative enterprise.”

Carbice produces Carbice Carbon, a unique heat-dissipating material that helps to lower device temperatures. The black foil material dissipates heat away from product packaging.

Heat Management and Carbice Carbon

As digitization of global industries comes ever closer and smart factories of the future are employing the use of more advanced and integrated electronics, thermal heat management of devices has become a greater challenge to engineers. The next generation of electronic devices that run too hot can suffer in terms of performance and can undergo premature failure.

The Founding Managing Director of Toyota AI Ventures, Jim Adler provided his views: “Thermal management is a critical electronics issue that has seen little disruptive innovation. Carbice Carbon’s heat-conducting technology is a game-changer for applications in multiple industries. Bara is a proven leader with the ideal combination of vision, strategy, operations, and technical expertise to realize Carbice’s potential.”

Carbice Carbon is composed of a composite of recycled aluminum and aligned carbon nanotubes, creating a high-connectivity nanostructure. The Carbice team have designed Carbice Carbon to be easy to apply, rework, and scale up. When assembled in high-level manufacturing Dr. Cola says that it lowers the cost of builds.
