Sony Ericsson to Expand Operations in China

April 08, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Sony Ericsson (Tokyo) Mobile Communications announced that it is forming a Beijing-based subsidiary to bolster the newly merged company's involvement in the Chinese market. Sony Corp. (Japan) combined with Ericsson (Sweden) last October to form Sony Ericsson, but in China, the two companies still market handsets separately under their individual brand names.

Sony Ericsson expects to have the Bejing unit set up by the end of May. Sony already has operations there, while Ericsson runs plants in Beijing and Nanjing. The venture must still be approved by Chinese authorities.
