Renesas to Transfer Front-End Factory to Mitsumi

September 01, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Mitsumi Electric Co. Ltd. (Japan) and Renesas Technology Corp. (San Jose, CA) have reached an agreement that would transfer a Chitose, Japan, factory completely to Mitsumi, according to the companies. The plant had been owned by Renesas and was doing front-end manufacturing for Renesas Northern Japan Semiconductor Inc., a wholly owned affiliated company of Renesas Technology.

The factory operates as a Renesas front-end line producing microcontrollers on 6 in wafers with 0.35-micron to 2.0-micron design rules. Mitsumi said it is moving toward the development of analog/digital combined ICs, and the use of processes provided at Chitose would make it possible to accelerate and expand the development of new products.

Following the transfer, the Chitose factory would continue to produce foundry products for Renesas and its subsidiary. Deployment of current employees is still being worked out. The deal is expected to be completed in December.
