PowerGenix, Original Power Bring GreenCell® Rechargeable Batteries To Portable Lawn & Garden Tool Market

June 04, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

PowerGenix, manufacturer of rechargeable nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries, announced that it has entered into a multi-year supply agreement with Original Power, a specialist in ac-dc power solutions for cordless outdoor power equipment. Under the agreement, PowerGenix will supply its patented NiZn Sub-C cell battery packs for introduction into multiple key Original Power product lines beginning in 2009.

Original Power will offer a new GreenLink® line of interchangeable cordless tools exclusively featuring PowerGenix’s NiZn battery packs, as well as incorporating the technology into its current lawn and garden power tool lineup. Utilizing PowerGenix’s rechargeable battery packs, the new line of environmentally friendly cordless products will bear the GreenCell trademark indicating inclusion of the clean, rechargeable and recyclable NiZn battery chemistry.

"As part of Original Power’s ongoing commitment to offer customers the best in lawn and garden power tools we feel a responsibility to uphold the highest safety and environmental standards. Our partnership with PowerGenix highlights a calculated move forward in this direction," said Kirk Turner, founder and President, Original Power. "No other battery chemistry on the market today fulfils all the durability and performance demands of garden power equipment while also being affordable, safe, and containing no environmentally harmful chemicals."

In Original Power product testing, PowerGenix’s NiZn cells were more durable, robust and offered up to 50% more power than the same size NiCd cells. PowerGenix’s battery packs supply bursts of high power for extended periods of time with rapid recharge capability, attributes particularly suited as a power solution for lawn and garden applications. Nickel-Zinc batteries are also inherently nontoxic and contain no lead, cadmium or mercury. Joining a growing list of manufacturers and retailers, Original Power will phase out all nickel-cadmium powered lawn and garden products by the end of 2010.

"Original Power is cognizant of the concerns within today’s battery market and has recognized consumer demand for cleaner battery alternatives. PowerGenix’s patented Nickel-Zinc chemistry is the first rechargeable battery technology to significantly out perform existing alkaline rechargeables while addressing increasing environmental restrictions," said Dan Squiller, CEO of PowerGenix.
