NEMA Revises PE 1-2003 UPS Standard
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA, Rosslyn, VA) released its PE 1-2003, Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) Specification and Performance Verification, an adoptive standard primarily based on IEC 62040-3. Its purpose is to provide manufacturers and users a method for specifying the performance attributes of a UPS and for verifying its performance against specifications.
The PE 1-2003 standard adopts the current edition of IEC 62040-3, Uninterruptible Power Systems-Part 3: Method of Specifying the Performance and Test Requirements, in its entirety, as well as the back-feed protection provisions of Annex L of IEC 62040-1-1, Uninterruptible Power Systems-Part 1-1: General and Safety Requirements for UPS Used in Operator Access Areas. The standard also contains requirements for UPS batteries consisting of the provisions in IEEE 1184, Guide for Batteries for Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems, and the relevant provisions that appeared in NEMA PE 1-1992.
