Integrated Automotive Cockpit Reference Solution Based on SoC

Renesas Electronics Corporation introduced the Renesas Cockpit Reference Solution, offering an out-of-the-box development experience for quick and economical digital cockpit application design. Developed based on the company's R-Car M3 system-on-chip (SoC), the Renesas Cockpit Reference Solution provides a mixture of production focused, module-level hardware and software that Renesas developed with additional software from the company's automotive partner network.

"Automotive integrated cockpit is a challenging space because the integration of so many different cockpit functions, such as multiple operating systems, a rich UI, Bluetooth, and navigation, requires significant system-level insight," said Daniel Sisco, Senior Director of Automotive Systems, Renesas Electronics. "Leveraging Renesas' deep expertise in both silicon and system-level design, our reference solution reduces the implementation burden, allowing customers to jumpstart their application development in a cost-effective way with production-focused hardware and software."

Renesas will demonstrate the new Cockpit Reference Solution its booth C190 at TU-Automotive Detroit 2019, June 5-6, in Novi, Michigan.

Key Features

It gives Tier 1 automakers and OEMs a full white box baseline solution that can be tailored to meet various application requirements. Based on the company's R-Car M3 SoC, the cockpit solution is pre-configured to show software and hardware features for out-of-the-box development. The system can be reconfigured, upgraded, or expanded on to produce tailored solutions that meet particular requirements.

R-Car Cockpit ECU hardware design

The electronic control unit (ECU) reference solution offers a practical, high-quality baseline implementation for multi-function display cockpit applications.

The R-Car Cockpit ECU Reference Hardware jumpstarts automotive development by shortcutting several difficult and time-consuming challenges including high-speed LPDDR4 layout, peripheral layout, design optimization, and functionality testing.

Renesas also offers a full turn-key, automotive, LPDDR4 (Low power DDR4 memory) reference design that addresses the challenge of creating a high-speed IO interface design, complete with design and test collateral.

Once the PCB is customized for the proprietary feature sets, the reference design allows quick bypassing of the traditionally steep learning curve.

Software Package

The software package, which is delivered as source code, enables users to boost application design with no existing cockpit solutions or collateral needed.

The R-Car Cockpit ECU Software package is provided as a transparent mixture of FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software), Renesas software and third-party software from key members of the company's automotive partner network. OEMs and production partners can modify, change, and distribute the Renesas code to provide the best fit for their application design needs.

The package provides a complete solution including BSP (board support package) and drivers, operation system (OS), virtualization example, Automotive-Grade Linux example, middleware, along with a full application layer.
