ENERGY STAR "Rethinks" Server Efficiency Specifications

The EPA ENERGY STAR Labeled Products program will publicly detail a second-generation power supply efficiency specification for servers and other data processing and communications equipment during Darnell’s Fifth-Annual Digital Power Forum (DPF ‘08). Activity is focused on measuring the actual power lost by the power supply in operation in the host equipment, not just efficiency measurements on a test bench. "Rethinking Power Supply Efficiency Specifications," by Arthur Howard, with ENERGY STAR contractor ICF Consulting, will be given during the Monday Plenary Session.

"We’ve made some good additional headway on power supplies with the new version 2.0 specification," stated Howard. "It has a lot of merit in dealing with some issues relative to quantifying overall efficiency for specific interactions between power supply efficiency and end-use product operation. It will be of interest to all delegates at this year’s Forum."
