Bekaert ECD Installs UNI-SOLAR Integrated PV System

April 29, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (ECD, Troy, MI) announced the installation of what is claimed to be the world's largest photovoltaic (PV) system integrated in a metal roof. The UNI-SOLAR photovoltaic laminates cover the roof on one of the main sections of the UBISA factory owned by NV Bekaert SA (Burgos, Spain).

With an installed capacity of 76kWp, the flexible, self-adhesive UNI-SOLAR PV laminates are attached to the roof elements by adhesion, supplied by Bekaert ECD Solar Systems Europe, a joint venture between Bekaert ECD Solar Systems LLC and United Solar Systems Corp., a joint venture between ECD and Bekaert.

United Solar CEO and Chairman and ECD President and CEO Stanford Ovshinsky said, "We are pleased that this installation will showcase the uniqueness and versatility of our building-integrated photovoltaic products. It is one more step toward our goal of turning all roofs into electrical power generators."
