Approvals Speed Shipments of Fuel Cell Systems

February 02, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Angstrom Power, a leader in micro hydrogen™ fuel cell technology, has received approvals from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Transport Canada to ship charged metal hydride systems within and between the two countries. Angstrom Power is the first company to have both approvals, enabling trans-border shipment of charged metal hydride systems by air.

"We are proud that Angstrom Power has received these approvals," said Ake Almgren, chief executive officer of Angstrom Power. "Our proactive engagement with regulatory agencies, standards bodies and certification organizations will pay dividends towards Angstrom's strategy of development, commercialization and ultimately widespread consumer use of clean, safe micro hydrogen systems."

The transportation approvals allow micro hydrogen fuel cell systems from Angstrom Power to be shipped ready for use out-of-the-box. Micro hydrogen devices store hydrogen "on-board" in metal hydride materials and can be refueled from any supply of hydrogen via Angstrom's line of refueling stations and cartridges. Devices powered by micro hydrogen fuel cells include portable lighting, range extenders, battery chargers and potentially handheld communications devices, including cellular phones and PDAs.

Under the approvals, Angstrom has blanket authorization to ship micro hydrogen prototypes and commercial devices for demonstration and evaluation purposes, thereby increasing speed to deployment and sales. A standardized strong outer packaging container is required for shipment. Angstrom is also approved for shipment of its micro hydrogen fuel cell systems via air cargo, ground, rail freight and cargo vessel within Canada and within the United States.
