PowerPulse provides readers extensive coverage of new product and technology developments spanning the globe from Asia to Europe and North America. Coverage includes active and passive components, energy storage devices, power converters, and more. The following is a listing (with links for the full story) of the most-read Product News stories from Europe on PowerPulse.Net for 2016, thus providing a window into the "pulse" of the trends and interests in the European Power Electronics community.

#20: 8-Watt DC-DC in DIP-16 Metal Package

The design of the new TEL 8WI series from Traco Power comprises the latest technology in order to optimize size, cost, performance and reliability. These dc-dc converters come in a very compact and robust DIP-16 metal package. With an efficiency of up to 86% they reliably operate at up to +70 degrees C environment temperature at full load or up to 80 degrees C with half load. More.

#19: SiC-based Power Module includes BJTs and Drivers

Raytheon UK's Integrated Power Solutions (IPS) business unit in Glenrothes, Scotland, has developed a high-temperature, small-form-factor bridge leg power module. Aimed at high-speed switching applications, the module has potential uses in the aerospace sector as it requires minimal external cooling and presents considerable weight-saving opportunities within the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) power system. Also, by supporting applications in harsh environments and in meeting high operating temperature demands, the module can also be used in the geothermal power and oil and gas sectors. More.

#18: LED Driver Provides Single Chip TRIAC and Digital Dimming

Dialog Semiconductor plc announced the iW3690, a driver IC for LED smart lighting that combines digital control (I2C) with the company's advanced phase-cut TRIAC dimming technology. For the first time, a single chip solution provides Smart LED luminaires the ability to dim using digital commands, including those sent wirelessly, while working concurrently with traditional TRIAC wall dimmers. The iW3690 is sampling now and will be available in production quantities this quarter. More.

#17: Mini AC-DCs for Smart Home / Smart Office Devices

Intelligently networked smart homes and smart offices often require control systems with many low power nodes, actuators and sensors that are "always on". RECOM's robust and reliable 2W and 3W ac-dc power supplies are specially designed to power smart building infrastructure 24/7 by offering compact sizes for easy installation, very low standby power consumption (35mW) and full household (IEC/EN60335), CE (LVD+EMC+RoHS2) and industrial safety certifications (IEC/EN/UL60950). More.

#16: 650V Superjunction MOSFETs in TO-Leadless Package

During last week's PCIM Europe event, Infineon Technologies AG launched a new device of the CoolMOSâ„¢ family: the CoolMOS C7 Gold 650 V in a TO-Leadless package. This combination of improved superjunction (SJ) semiconductor process and advanced SMD package design is delivering unparalleled performance in hard switching applications. The small footprint of this package brings power density advantages for server, telecom and solar applications. More.

#15: Probes Measure High Frequency Motor Drive Common-Mode Currents

Motor installers and design engineers can deal more effectively with high frequency (HF) common-mode currents caused by variable-frequency drives, using the latest non-contact current probes announced by Power Electronic Measurements Ltd. (PEM) at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC 2016). More.

#14: Automotive 40A High-Side Switches are Better Than Relays

Infineon Technologies AG supports the trend towards decentralized, intelligent and cost effective vehicle power net architectures. Infineon now launched Power PROFETâ„¢, a new ultra-low ohmic smart high-side switch family. These protected switches offer the lowest on-resistance and the highest energy capability on the market. They enable the replacement of electromechanical relays and fuses in power distribution and junction boxes up to 40A dc. More.

#13: Low-Profile DC-DCs for Automotive IoT Applications

Powerbox announces the launch of a new series of dc-dc converters for automotive applications and on-board Internet of Things (IoT). Based on a highly-integrated components platform and low-profile planar magnetics the new series ENA100 (100W) and ENA200 (200W) are packaged in a plastic enclosure, which is IP21 and the boards are conformal coated to withstand high humidity, complying with the challenging environments found in the automotive industry. The series comes with galvanic isolation of 500Vdc and built-in protections and filtering, making products ready to use without additional components. More.

#12: UltraCap Aims to Create Ultra-Lightweight EV Battery

Scientists from London-based UltraCap Ltd. are in the final stages of developing a "green" solid state battery for electric vehicles that they claim will be 40-times lighter than current Lithium-Ion batteries. UltraCap founders, Professor Vladimir Krstic and Nico Van Dongen, say their new battery, the UltraCapacitor, will be able to charge within minutes and that, eventually, a pocket-sized version of the battery will bring us one step closer to emission-free transportation. More.

#11: Vincotech Expands offering to Mid-Power Inverters

Vincotech announced the launch of a new industry-standard low-profile package for mid-power inverters. Engineered mainly for industrial drives, solar power and UPS applications, the VINco E3 package raises the performance bar with its enhanced power density and reliability. More.
