Power Product Recap

June 17, 2020 by Alessandro Mascellino

This article highlights new products from Analog Devices, CUI Incorporated, Riedon, and Microchip.

This week’s product roundup brings together components from different fields and applications, including transceivers, power supplies, shunt modules, and diode arrays.

Isolated RS-485 RS-422 transceiver From Analog Devices

Designed to simplify PCB layout, these new transceivers from Analog Devices build on their predecessors to provide more functionality for space-constrained applications.

Featuring cable invert pins, the components allow users to correct reversed cable connections on the A, B, Y, and Z bus pins while also maintaining the receiver fail-safe.

The board also has a built-in, isolated DC-to-DC converter, cutting the need for an external isolated power supply, and can operate in ambient temperatures between -40°C and +105°C.

The new transceivers from Analog Devices are compatible with several input and output configurations, including application utilizing FPGAs and PROFIBUS. Because of this, the components voltage can be set between 3V to 5.5V in (Vcc), 1.7V to 5.5V in for logic-side IO, and either 5V or 3.3V out from dc-dc for to bus-side supply (5V only if Vcc >4.5V).

The transceivers will come in four different versions, respectively ADM2867E, ADM2865E, ADM2863E, and ADM2861E. You can find out more about each of them individually on Analog Devices’ product page.

VMS-450B 450W Internal AC-DC Power Supplies From CUI

This new family of internal AC-DC power supplies has been developed specifically for medical and dental applications.

The components provide 450W of continuous power from compact chassis mount packages and are compliant with the medical 60601-1 edition 3.1 safety standards for 2 x MOPP applications and 4th edition EMC standards.

The new range of power supplies count four models: VMS-450B, VMS-450B-CF, VMS-450B-CFS, and VMS-450B-CNF, all with 5Vdc AUX output and a 3" x 5" footprint.

The VMS-450B is the only open frame option and is designed for applications with less space and heat management outside of the unit.

The other three models come in a metal case with fan configurations, either on the top or side and with one with no fan.

The new power supply series from CUI also has various safety features, including power factor correction, over-temperature, over-voltage, over current, and short circuit protection.

The components are already available on CUI’s website, and are priced at $150.98 per unit at 10 pieces through distribution.

Isolated High-Power Shunt Modules From Riedon

Resistor manufacturer Riedon has released its SSA Smart Shunt series to provide engineers with a compact and cost-effective alternative to specific Hall devices.

The California-based company has been producing resistive solutions for 45 years, and the SSA Smart Shunt series is now the company's flagship device.

The new components feature a built-in precision amplifier, together with reinforced electrical isolation (up to 1500VDC) capabilities and high levels stability and accuracy. They can operate between -40°C and 125°C, and in high-power (100A to 1000A) scenarios, making the resistors ideal for applications with electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) traction inverters, AC/DC converters, and more.

The SSA Smart Shunt series is also capable of isolating amplifiers, establishing a step forward in the development of shunt-based current sensing.

Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode Array Family From Microchip

Developed for uses in aviation and space systems, these diode arrays are part of Microchip’s portfolio of Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) vertical arrays.

The MIL-PRF-19500 JANTX-certified series includes more than 25 3 kW diodes, each with different screening levels, polarities, and qualification standards. The latest addition to the MDA3KP family, these voltage-clamping diodes feature Avalanche Breakdown Diode (ABD) capabilities that divert excess current around sensitive components to protect them from electrical overstress.

The latest addition to the MDA3KP family, these voltage-clamping diodes feature Avalanche Breakdown Diode (ABD) capabilities that divert excess current around sensitive components to protect them from electrical overstress. Because they are vertically constructed and come in an 8-diode, 16-pin surface mount package also means less printed circuit board space is required while enabling higher power densities.

The new MDA3KP TVS diode arrays are available in unidirectional and bidirectional construction in standoff voltages of 6V to 40V, and in the following screened versions: M, MA, MXL, and MX.

You can request more information on them and book samples from Microchip’s website
