Voltaic Systems Launches Standalone Solar Chargers

August 25, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Voltaic Systems announced the release of a new line of solar chargers for handheld electronics including two standalone chargers. Voltaic embeds the power, durability and design of its original solar backpack into three compact styles. The company says that each supplies four times the solar power and twice the battery power of the most popular solar charger on the market.

The Amp Solar Charger is a standalone charger. It folds tight and fits easily in any sized bag with room to carry all the adapters needed to charge your devices.

The Fuse Solar Charger provides a lightweight way to add solar and battery power to any bag. It connects securely in seconds to backpacks, tents, bicycle racks and anywhere else solar power is needed.

The Switch Solar Bag is a versatile day bag which provides enough room to carry a camera, phone, and an iPad or Kindle in an easy to access compartment.

The new chargers all feature 4W of rugged solar panels that generate more than enough power to run a smartphone and thousands of other handheld electronics. One hour in the sun will provide about three hours of talktime and 4-5 hours of sunshine will fully charge a typical phone.

The panels feed into a universal USB Battery Pack that is specially designed to charge efficiently from solar. A full battery pack will charge a phone 1-2 times and ensures power is available any time of day. The battery can also be charged from the USB port on a computer or with optional ac or dc Chargers.

CEO Shayne McQuade commented, "We started off making solar bags in part because we were so disappointed by the lack of power and slow charge times of the standalone solar chargers on the market. With this move into making standalone chargers we hope to continue to transform expectations about the performance and usefulness of portable solar power."

The units are priced as follows: Amp ($99), Fuse ($129) and Switch ($129).

The suggested retail price includes: two high-efficiency solar panels that together generate up to 4W of power; 3,000mAh, 11W-hour Lithium Polymer battery with integrated USB port; 9 common adapters for easy connection to most phones and other handheld electronics; USB Charging Cable for devices and Charging Cable for Voltaic Battery; and Switchable solar output Voltage between 6 and 12V, providing ability to charge DSLR camera, video camera and other devices with 7.4V batteries directly from solar power.
