Vishay Introduces 1W Surface-Mount Power Metal Strip® Resistor in 1206 Package Size

New Products Aug 22, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced a new surface-mount Power Metal Strip® resistor that the company claims is the industry's first 1W current sensing resistor in the very small 1206 package size. The WSLP1206 resistor features a very low 2-mΩ to 50-mΩ resistance value range, and high-temperature performance up to 170°C.

The small size of the WSLP1206 resistor allows it to replace larger current sensing resistors, saving space on the circuit board that in turn will create smaller and lighter products for the consumer. It is intended for current sensing and pulse applications in dc-to-dc converters for computers, VRMs for laptops, and Li-Ion battery safety and management; and electronic automotive systems, including engine controls, multi-media electronics, climate controls, and anti-lock brakes.

Manufactured using proprietary techniques that result in extremely high power and low resistance values, the WSLP1206 features all-welded construction with a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element. The resistor offers very low inductance values from 0.5 nH to 5 nH, an excellent frequency response to 50 MHz, and low thermal EMF of less than 3µV/°C.

Samples and production quantities of the new resistor are available now, with a lead time of four to six weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 100,000-piece quantities starts at $0.25 per piece.
