Vestas Launches New Multi-MW Turbines

September 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Ringkøbing, Denmark) announced that it will be launching its very latest turbines: the V90-1.8MW, the V90-2.0MW and the V90-3.0MW. All three models have been subjected to a period of in-depth testing and serial production of the turbines will start at the beginning of 2004.

According to Vestas, the V90-3.0MW turbine, which features a new nacelle design, can present a range of solutions that sets new standards for wind turbine technology. The 44-meter blades of the V90-3.0MW turbine are the longest Vestas has ever produced, and the company has introduced new materials into the blade construction. In a number of areas, light carbon fiber components have replaced those traditionally made of fiberglass.

Combining the further development of the V80-2.0MW turbine with the new 44-meter blade designed for the V90-3.0MW turbine has led to development of the two other new turbines in the V90 range, the V90-1.8MW and the V90-2.0MW. The launch of the 1.8MW and 2.0MW models complete Vestas' new V90 range. According to Vestas, the V90-1.8MW and V90-2.0MW are particularly well-suited to areas with modest wind conditions and are primarily intended for the markets of Central and Southern Europe.
