Tyco Unveils New Outdoor Power System

March 18, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems (Dallas, TX) unveiled its new Outdoor Power System (OPS), designed to address the needs of the outdoor wireless market, and which integrates state-of-the-art switch-mode rectifier technology with a high-performance cooling system and streamlined remote control and monitoring to deliver efficient and reliable power at a competitive price.

The new OPS cabinets give users a choice of +24V or -48V output. A single cabinet provides up to 21kW (including redundancy) and operates from a 208Vac to 240Vac input source. The cabinet can house two power shelves equipped with up to eight rectifiers in the environmentally sealed cabinet. It also features two battery shelves in a separate compartment, which can hold IR125 VRLA (125Ah) batteries or Hawker C11 (90Ah) batteries. In addition, users have the option of connecting two five-shelf supplemental battery cabinets for additional battery reserve.

A high-performance heating and cooling system comes standard to Tyco Electronics' OPS, ensuring the equipment inside the electronics compartment remains within its optimal temperature range, and its sealed construction protects the equipment from such elements as dust, water and air pollutants. A fan to assist in the venting of hydrogen gas buildup cools the battery compartment, which is separate from the electronics. The heat-exchanger controller monitors temperatures and voltage in the vented battery compartment.

The durable, weatherproof cabinet is constructed of heavy-duty, double-walled aluminum and meets Bellcore Zone IV earthquake requirements as well as the environmental requirements of GR-487 and EN 300 019. The OPS cabinets are factory equipped with an ac-distribution panel. An optional bypass switch for ac alternator feed is also available. Cables and thermal probes for internal connections are included with the system, while thermal probes and multiplexers are available as orderable accessories.
