Tyco Electronics Launches Sentry 3000 Platform

New Products Nov 03, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems Inc. (Dallas, TX) announced the Sentry™ 3000 cross-market compliant platform designed for distributed architectures and positioned to serve both data and telecom markets with a simple exchange of the power supply. The Sentry 3000 platform consists of the AC-3000™ front-end rectifier, the DC-3000™ entry module (PEM), and the PS-300™ power shelf. Both the rectifier and PEM provide 3,000W of continuous power. Two power supplies are positioned across a 19in rack-mountable shelf, either in an N+N redundant configuration or providing 6,000W of constant power.

The AC-3000 front-end rectifier provides the interface between commercial ac feeds and ±48Vdc distributed systems featuring universal high-line ac input, constant output power, and input under-voltage lockout. The rectifier is safeguarded with power-factor correction, over-voltage and over-current protection, over-temperature warning and protection, and redundant operation capabilities. The DC-3000 PEM provides the interface between -48Vdc distributed systems and an external battery plant. It offers electrical isolation between the two power plants, EMI filtering, audible noise filtering and reverse input polarity protection. The patented PS-3000 shelf is designed to fit 19in racks, supporting both the rectifier and PEM. The modular construction incorporates product keying, preventing power supplies of opposite output polarities from being inadvertently plugged into the same backplane.

The Sentry 3000 Platform features a 1.5U (2.625in) profile and 9.75W/in³, using a patented zero-height shelf to minimize footprint. The Sentry 3000 Platform is designed on a single printed wiring board (PWB) minimizing PWB interconnect points of failure and offering a reliable, cost-effective platform. It features a horizontal backplane improving airflow along with variable-speed fans used to minimize audible noise and improve fan reliability. As a cross-compliant platform, it addresses grounding and isolation requirements from both commercial mains and central office interfaces.
