Trio Motion Technology Debuts the MC206 Motion Coordinator Controller

August 13, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Trio Motion Technology (UK) announced the next generation of its Motion Coordinator Series, the MC206. The Motion Coordinator MC206 is based on Trio's 32-bit DSP technology and provides up to five axes of servo or stepper control, plus a master encoder input. The MC206 fits four axes of stepper and servo circuitry in a DIN-rail-mounted package measuring 107mm x 182mm x 53mm. An expansion connector is fitted to add a fifth axis or any other standard Trio daughter option boards. Daughter-board functions include; profibus, servo axis, stepper axis, SSI absolute servo and PLS high-speed outputs.

The MC206 can be a servo or stepper controller by using a feature-enable code. All necessary DAC and stepper circuitry is installed and ready for use. The controller can be supplied with any combination of servo or stepper axes pre-enabled, and has been designed to allow the user to upgrade at a later date by entering the feature-enable code through Trio's Motion Perfect software. Up to four axes can be enabled in software on the MC206.

Internally, the MC206 has an eight-axis capability: four real axes of servo or stepper, encoder follower input, one daughter board axis, and three "virtual" axes. Any axis not used in hardware can be used as a virtual axis by changing a single parameter.

Additional motion or other functions can be added using Trio's daughter boards.

The MC206 has 16 opto-isolated digital I/O as standard. Ultra-fast high-speed hardware registration inputs are available for each axis for highly accurate control of print and packaging lines. The I/O count can be expanded using Trio's CAN bus digital and analog modules. The controller offers two RS-232 serial ports, one RS-485 port, one TTL serial port, a USB port and a CAN channel as standard. Adapters are available to convert the TTL port to RS485 and Trio's fiber-optic network. Modbus communication is supported on the auxiliary serial ports for quick setup of an operator interface.
