Torex Multi-Chip Module Integrates 3A Step-Down DC-DC Controller & Power MOSFET into Single Module

August 30, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

TOREX Semiconductor Ltd. has developed a multi-chip module integrating a 3A step-down dc-dc controller and a power MOSFET into a single module. The XCM526 Series of multi chip modules combines a step-down dc-dc controller and power MOSFET into a single unit. By integrating a low ON resistance (70m, VGS=-4.5V), high-speed switching power MOSFET with a step-down dc-dc controller, a stable current up to a maximum of 3A can be supplied with high efficiency.

The switching frequency can be selected from 1MHz and 500kHz, and the series is well suited for space-saving designs. The input voltage range is 4 to 16V, and the output voltage can be set to 1.2V or higher by using an external resistor ladder. The reference voltage is 0.9V ±1.5%. PWM control (XCM526A) or PWM/PFM auto switching control (XCM526B) can be selected for the operation mode. A soft-start feature is included with a fixed internal setting of 4ms or with a user selectable external setting. A UVLO protection is built-in, and this forcibly turns the driver transistor off at an input voltage of 2.3V (TYP.) or less.

These modules are housed in a USP-12B01 (2.3 x 2.8 x h0.6mm) package and are ideal for portable communication devices, which are becoming increasingly smaller and lightweight.
