TI Intros TPS60230 LED Charge Pump

March 31, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced a new white light-emitting diode (LED) charge pump that manages the power supplied to white LED color display backlight applications in cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and camcorders without the need for an inductor.

The 3 mm x 3 mm TPS60230 features up to 87 percent efficiency and can drive up to five white LEDs with a constant current of 25 mA each, providing a total of 125 mA. The 1 MHz switching frequency allows the use of small capacitors (<1 µF). The brightness level of each LED is adjusted through pulse-width modulated dimming functions on two enable inputs.

Volume production for the TPS60230 is scheduled for the end of the second quarter. The TPS60230 comes in a 3 mm x 3 mm, QFN package. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $1.55.
