TDK-Lambda Unveils 30 to 200W Railway Quarter & Half Brick Modules

September 14, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

TDK-Lambda has expanded its line of dc-dc converters, the CN-A Series, with the introduction of the new 200W, CN200A models. Like the other models in this series, they operate off a wide range of dc inputs from 60 to 160Vdc, which is widely used in the railway industry. Available with output voltages from 5 to 24Vdc (adjustable ±10%) with output power ratings of 30, 50, 100, and now 200W, these fully-regulated and isolated power modules deliver exceptional performance. The 30 to 100W modules come in the industry standard quarter-brick footprint and the new 200W units are packaged in a half-brick footprint. The new CN200A (200W) models have a unique "current-share" feature, which is well suited for paralleling two or more units for high power applications.

The CN-A dc-dc modules are suitable for both rolling stock and fixed installations, enabling user’s to design cost-effective EN50155 compliant systems without the risks associated with custom product designs, and in a much shorter timescale. TDK-Lambda Americas also offers custom design and manufacturing services for its customers who prefer to buy a complete turn-key system that meets their exact electrical and mechanical requirements.

Designed for very harsh environments, the CN-A Series meets the stringent shock and vibration requirements of IEC61373 Category 1 Class B, as well as the Japanese equivalent standard JIS E 4031. In addition, all models accept the wide-range dc input commonly found in railway applications, which allows operation from any voltage between 60 and 160Vdc.

These baseplate-cooled power converters have standard pin-outs and provide full output power from -40 to +100°C at baseplate without deratings. The 200W model CN200A110-24, for example, delivers 8.4A at 24Vdc with a conversion efficiency of up to 88%. The quarter-brick modules (up to 100W) measure 1.45 x 2.28 inches and only 0.50 inch high. This translates to a power density of up to 60.5W/in³. The new half-brick 200-watt models are 2.4 x 2.28 x 0.50 inches, which provides a power density of up to 73.1W/in³.

As standard, the CN-A units are equipped with remote sense, remote on/off, over voltage and over current protection circuitry. All CN-A models have an input-to-output isolation of 3000Vac, are safety-approved to UL/CSA/EN60950-1 and carry the CE mark in accordance with the LV Directive.

The new 200W CN200A models of railway converters are available now and priced at $141.00 each in 500 piece quantities.
