September 17, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Solar Dynamics Inc. (Simsbury, CT), a manufacturer of portable solar power systems, announced the availability of its new Cub™ personal portable power system that provides dc and ac electricity for small electronic devices and recharges itself through a 5W, thin-film, solar module. The Cub can run a range of electronic devices, including cell phones, laptop computers, televisions, GPS systems, radios and portable lights.

The dc version of the Cub provides 3Vdc, 6Vdc, 9Vdc and 12Vdc. The ac/dc version of the Cub provides both dc power and up to 75W of ac power. Both the dc and ac/dc versions come with dc power socket adapters and an energy-efficient task/flash light. Optional accessories that are sold separately include an 8W, water-proof, fluorescent light; a wall charger; and a 12Vdc charger to charge from a car cigarette lighter outlet.

The Cub is emission and noise-free, utilizing the sun and a solar module to recharge its fully contained 7.5Ah battery. The battery is protected against over-charging and over-discharging by an electronic controller. The Cub weighs 13lbs and is housed within a heavy-duty, weather-resistant pack. The system includes carrying handles and backpack straps that can be used to carry the unit when exposing the solar module for recharging.
