Sipex Unveils SP6655 Synchronous Buck Regulator

June 10, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Sipex Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the latest addition to its power management product line. The SP6655 is a synchronous 400mA buck regulator in a dual-fine-pitch no-lead (DFN) package. By occupying only 3mm x 3mm of board space, the DFN package reduces layout area by 40%. The device has a 0.8V internal reference that allows low-output voltages and is stable with ceramic capacitors, achieving low output-voltage ripple. The buck regulator is suitable for PDAs, MP3 players, cell phones and other portable applications.

The SP6655’s proprietary architecture includes internal synchronous 0.3ohm switches that allow efficiency across the entire load range. The architecture also allows 100% duty cycle operation, critical in extending operating life when the battery is at or below the minimum usable voltage. The device operates from input voltages of 2.7V to 5.5V, suitable for single-cell, lithium-ion applications. By consuming only 20µA of quiescent current (typical) and an ultra-low 10nA in shutdown mode, the SP6655 extends battery life.

The SP6655 is available now and is priced at $1.29 in 1,000-piece quantities. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the device.
