Resistors with 7W Rating and Resistance to 1mΩ in 2818 Case Size

December 21, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced a new surface-mount Power Metal Strip® resistor designed to save space in automotive, industrial, computer, and consumer applications. The Vishay Dale WSHM2818 combines a high 7-W power rating with extremely low resistance values down to 1mΩ in the compact 2818 case size. The advanced construction of the WSHM2818 resistor incorporates improved thermal management and a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element with low TCR (< 20 ppm/ degree C).

This results in a high-power resistor in the 2818 package size that maintains the superior electrical characteristics and performance of the Power Metal Strip construction, such as excellent 1,000-hour load life stability and very good resistance to short time overload of < ± 1%. The device's high power-to-footprint-size ratio allows designers to save board space and create smaller end products by replacing larger resistors with similar power capability and multiple devices with lower power ratings.

The AEC-Q200-qualified resistor is ideal for all types of precision current sensing, voltage division, and high power pulse load applications, including switching regulators, current detectors, power supplies and power amplifiers in automotive electronic controls such as engine, injector, brushless dc motors, anti-lock brakes, climate, and battery management controls.

The WSHM2818 also fits into industrial controls, including down-hole test/measurement equipment for oil/gas well drilling; inverter controls for HVAC systems; motor drives and dc-dc converters for servers, VRMs for computers, and Li-ion battery safety and management. Samples and production quantities of the new resistor are available now, with a lead time of six to 10 weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery only starts at $0.38 per piece in 10,000-piece quantities.

Like all Power Metal Strip resistors, the device released today features an all-welded construction that contributes to its superior electrical performance. A proprietary processing technique produces extremely low resistance values ranging from 1 mΩ to 100 mΩ, with tight tolerance of ± 1.0%. The WSHM2818 provides very low inductance of < 5 nH, an excellent frequency response to 50 MHz, low thermal EMF (< 3 μV/ degree C), and an operating temperature range from -65 to +170 degrees C. The device is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay GREEN.
