RECOM Debuts R-78xx-0.5 Series Switching Regulators

October 19, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

RECOM International Power GmbH (Germany), a developer of dc-dc technology, debuted its new R-78xx-0.5 Series of 6 W switching regulators that are pin-compatible substitutes for analogue 78xx linear regulators, which are suitable for low-power applications and as supplements for distributed power supplies. The new regulators avoid the physical and mechanical problems associated with heatsinks and waste heat transportation.

The R-78xx-0.5 Series features an efficiency of up to 97 percent (non-isolated), a low profile of 11.5 mm x 7.5 mm x 10.2 mm, an output current of 500 mA, output voltage from 1.8 V to 12 V, an input-voltage range from 1.5 V to 34 V, a wide input range of 4.75 V to 34 V, short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown, non-standard outputs available between 1.5 V to 15 V, and low ripple and noise of 30 mVpp to 50 mVpp.

The RECOM R-78xx-0.5 is continuous short-circuit protected and incorporates a thermal shutdown protection function that switches off the converter if the internal temperature exceeds 160 °C. The short-circuit protection circuit restricts the input current with a shorted output to typically 25 mA, and helps to avoid further damage to the supply circuitry during fault conditions. The operating temperature range is from -40 °C to +70 °C with full load, and extends from +70 °C to +85 °C with a derating to 80 percent of maximum load.
