PowerDsine Partners with Freescale to Offer 4-Channel PoE ICs

December 14, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

PowerDsine has announced the new PD64004A 4-channel Power over Ethernet (PoE) Manager Integrated Circuit (IC) developed jointly with Freescale Semiconductors. The new device is implemented using Freescale's SMARTMOS8™ technology.

The new chip integrates power, analog and advanced digital logic functions into one device. It is optimized for use in low-port count Ethernet switches, Small Office Home Office (SOHO) routers and midspans.

"We believe that as Power over Ethernet penetrates the SOHO market and beyond into gateways and routers in the residential VoIP market, there will be a greater need for standalone solutions that will be cost effective and require minimum design efforts," said Madhu Rayabhari, VP Marketing of PowerDsine. "In our view the PD64004A, with its automatic capabilities and ease of design, achieves these goals."

The PD64004A 4-port PoE Manager is designed to minimize the number of required external components and to reduce overall system costs. The PD64004A is capable of operating under a switch ambient temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. While significant for all end applications, this feature has particular benefit for systems targeted for industrial use. Moving to 1 OMEGA sense-resistors, The PD64004A reduces the total thermal dissipation and eases system design.

"Capitalizing on the vast experience gained in the low port density PoE market with our current PD64004 four-port manager, PowerDsine incorporated customers' requests for greater performance, and better system cost into the new PD64004A, to create the ideal low port PoE manager," said Mr. Rayabhari.

The PD64004A now supports fully automated operation and power management, eliminating the need for adding microcontrollers to control or configure. Special pins have been dedicated for total setup, in order to allow the device to be truly stand-alone. Up to eight PD64004A managers can co-operate automatically to provide up to 32 ports of PoE.

Samples of the PD64004A 4-Channel PoE Manager are currently available. Production for shipment is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2006. The device is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3af-2003 standard and also works with pre-standard proprietary solutions.
