Panasonic Batteries (Secaucus, NJ) announced that its new ultra-thin lithium coin cells are available with a 0.5mm profile. The cells are also available in 1.2mm thickness. Panasonic states it is using proprietary technology to replace the material for the gaskets and separators with a specially engineered plastic and to incorporate an electrolyte with a high boiling point. According to the company, the new ultra-thin battery allows for the design of non-contact cards and ID tags of less than 1mm in thickness. The 1.2mm CR Series type manganese dioxide lithium batteries are available in four diameters and capacities ranging from 18mAh to 100mAh. The 0.5mm additions to the BR Series coin-type Poly-carbonmonofluoride lithium battery line are available in capacities of 20mAh (20mm diameter) and 30mAh (24mm diameter) and can withstand temperatures up to 85 degrees C. In addition to a wide operating temperature range and a strong resistance to electrolyte leakage, the BR series has a nominal voltage of 3V and an annual deterioration rate as low as 1.0 percent when stored at room temperature, according to Panasonic.
