Packaging of Waterproof LED Ballasts Optimized for Residential and Commercial Designs

New Products Aug 07, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

A new series of waterproof 40W LED drivers that is capable of being installed in damp locations for a wide variety of residential and commercial applications has been announced by Phihong USA. Designated the PDA041 series, the new LED power supplies feature a squared-off case design in place of the more traditional ballast-style of its sister series and are available with constant-current outputs of 700, 1050 and 1400mA at a nominal input voltage rating of 120-277Vac.

“Expanding our 40W LED driver offering to include two different case designs will provide lighting designers with greater flexibility when integrating a power source into an application,” said Keith Hopwood, vice president of Phihong. “LEDs’ small size allows them to be easily integrated into non-traditional forms, which has created a demand for LED drivers with different case styles and dimensions designed to fit these new shapes.”

The PDA041 series is Class 2 per UL1310 and also complies with UL8750 and UL60950. Standard features on the drivers include over-voltage protection, over-current protection, short-circuit protection, brownout and brownout recovery. Additionally, the power supplies have power factor correction greater than 0.9 and a total harmonic distortion of less than 20%.

Available with 0-10V and resistive dimming features as the PDA041W, and without dimming features as the PDA041B, the IP67-rated series is fully waterproof and is designed for operation in temperatures ranging from -40°C to over 80°C. The drivers measure 95mm (3.74”) x 71mm (2.79”) x 32mm (1.26”).

Pricing for the non-dimming PDA041B series starts at $30.10 in single unit quantities and pricing for the dimmable PDA041W series starts at $36.26 in single unit quantities.
