Oki Electric Unveils 10G Optical Modulator Driver IC

August 11, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) announced that it has developed what it claims to be the world's smallest footprint, 10 Gbps optical, modulator driver IC for optical communication, with a power consumption of 0.65 W. Sales for the new driver IC starts from August 2004 targeting a 50% worldwide market share in the fiscal year ending March 2006.

Compared to conventional modules that operate on a power supply of -5.2 V, Oki's KGL4195KD is a 10 Gbps optical modulator driver IC that operates on +3.3 V, providing a lower voltage drive and lower power consumption module. While maintaining a wave-type driver IC, Oki reduced power consumption by 35% by optimizing circuit design in the low-voltage power supply and developed a modulator with 0.65 W in a 4 x 4, small ceramic package.
