Power management company Eaton today announced its new TV supercapacitors with 3-volt (V) cells that help increase stored energy capacity and power by 20 percent compared to 2.7V cells. Working either in conjunction with or as standalone alternatives to batteries, TV supercapacitors help reduce maintenance requirements and can provide a longer life and cost-effective energy storage for applications that require extremely reliable back-up power, pulse power or voltage control. Providing one of the industry’s highest pulse power, Eaton’s supercapacitors’ increased capacity enables improved system performance for utility meters, automotive systems, data center flash servers and industrial automation.

“Eaton’s supercapacitors are designed to provide high power charging and discharging, peak power shaving and back-up power in critical applications,’’ said Jason Lee, global product manager, Eaton’s Electronics Division. “Our latest technology provides the ability to extend temporary emergency power in order to safely power down systems and avoid data loss during a power outage.”

Supercapacitors are being used as energy storage devices in high peak power applications where operating and product costs present challenges. In applications requiring large quantity cell-count designs, 10 percent fewer cells are required for the same operating voltage, offering the ability to make systems smaller and reduce costs.  Additionally, supercapacitors help reduce total cost of ownership by offering a longer lifespan and higher reliability compared to systems that rely only on batteries for energy storage.

Eaton’s TV supercapacitors provide one of the industry’s highest pulse power, a significant increase in performance over 2.7V supercapacitors, resulting in a 35 percent increase in usable discharge energy, with typical 0.3V de-rating. The stored energy of the TV cells allow longer back up times for flash storage servers. The product is a drop-in replacement for Eaton’s HB and HV product offerings.

Eaton’s TV cells deliver one of the industry’s leading equivalent series resistance (ESR), broad capacitance ratings from 6 to 100 farads (F) and a wide temperature range between minus 40-degrees Celsius (C) and 65-degrees C. The cells are manufactured in a TS16949 certified factory.
