Murata Develops Mini PRG21 Series Thermistor

November 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Murata Electronics North America Inc. (Smyrna, GA), a global supplier of ceramic passive components, announced the development of a ceramic PTC thermistor with the a multi-layered structure, the PRG21 Series, which measures 2.0mm x 1.25mm x 0.9mm, with a resistance of 0.2 ohms and a non-operating current of 0.5A (at an ambient temperature of 60°C). The series was designed primarily for use in USB equipment, power supply circuits and PC-related electronics.

The PRG21 Series thermistor provides low resistance under normal conditions to prevent signal attenuation and power consumption. The thermistors provide a self-reset function, allowing the resistance to be restored to the original low level after the cause of over-current is removed and heat generation stops. The series does not contain lead and can be mounted with lead-free solder, which makes reflow soldering at 260°C maximum applicable.

The PRG21 Series thermistor (0805 EIA size) with circuit protection began manufacturing in September 2003. Mass production of 500,000 pieces per month will begin in October. The current sample lead-time is 8 to 10 weeks. Production quantities are available in the price range from $0.45 to $0.50 per piece.
