MGE Office Protection Systems Releases New UPS For IT Networks

October 31, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

MGE Office Protection Systems announced the introduction of its new Evolution UPS. The new Evolution units are designed for protecting rack-optimized servers, storage systems and Internetworking equipment against damaging and costly power disruptions.

The company claims that the Evolution is the first line-interactive UPS in its class with an adaptable, multi-position PDU (Power Distribution Unit) that provides a space saving method of easily adding receptacles to the back, side or top of the UPS - freeing up much needed space in dense rack environments. In addition, optional universal HotSwap Maintenance By-Pass modules allow the UPS to be replaced without interrupting the power supply – assuring power continuity.

The Evolution 650/850/1150/1550 and 2000VA models all feature multiple form factors to suit any need: Tower, Rack/Tower versatile with a choice of depth sizes to accommodate a variety of rack enclosures. At only 1.75" (1U), 3.5" (2U) high along with a 5.25" (3U) short depth 3kVA unit to accommodate typically shallow telecom racks/enclosures, the Evolution’s slim design is claimed to break the size barrier and increase the power density to assure continual power for IT systems.

For critical applications needing extended runtime during prolonged power outages, the Evolution S 1250/1750/2500 and 3000VA models can accommodate up to 4 external battery modules providing ample time to keep a Windows 2000/NT/2003 server running for up to 145 minutes (at 100% load) - plenty of time to ride through most power disturbances or to allow for an orderly shutdown during an extended power blackout. As with its other UPS systems, microprocessor controlled charging extends battery life up to 50%, while smart battery management protects against deep discharging and assures advanced warning when the hot-swappable batteries eventually need replacement.

Due to the Evolution’s high-frequency line-interactive technology, these units deliver a clean sinewave output (a must for servers), voltage correction as well as wide input voltage tolerances (especially important in fluctuating power environments). A variety of additional advanced features ensure maximum protection for all connected equipment. MGE’s Powershare™ technology provides two programmable outlets on the Evolution units that can be used to quickly reset network devices remotely and allocate longer backup times to the most critical equipment. A cold start capability allows users to turn on the UPS and connected equipment even after the power has failed.
