Medium-Power Film Capacitors for AC Filtering in Power Conversion

December 04, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corporation has introduced the new FLA Series medium power film capacitors. Comprised of metallized polypropylene dielectric imbued with a soft polyurethane (PU) resin and encased in a cylindrical aluminum can with fast-on or screw terminals, FLA Series capacitors exhibit high ripple current and extremely high dielectric strength in operating temperatures spanning -40 to +80 degrees C. They are specifically designed for qc filtering in power converters, UPS systems, solar and wind inverters, and motor drives. The new FLA Series capacitors exhibit high-reliability, single-phase performance, as well as feature self-healing technology and an internal overpressure disconnector device.

“The new FLA Series film capacitors were specifically designed with self-healing properties and an internal overpressure disconnector to provide our customers in the various power conversion markets with a high-reliability, long-lasting component ideal for ac filtering,” said Gilles Terzulli, worldwide marketing manager, power film capacitors, AVX.

Available in nine case sizes spanning A– I, eight voltages spanning 250–690Vac, capacitance values spanning 10µF to 600µF, and two capacitance tolerances (±5% and ±10%), FLA Series medium power film capacitors are optimized for ac voltage performance and exhibit high overvoltage capabilities as a result of their self-healing properties. Additionally, unlike aluminum electrolytic capacitors, FLA Series polypropylene capacitors do not have a catastrophic failure mode, as film capacitors simply experience a parametric loss of capacitance of approximately 5%, which both negates the risk of short-circuiting and enables continued functionality. Lifetime for the RoHS-compliant series is 100,000 hours at rated voltage and 70 degrees C. Lead time for the series is approximately eight weeks.
