Magnetek Intros MM5 Series Modular AC-DC Power Supply

New Products Mar 13, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The Power Electronics Group of Magnetek Inc. (Chatsworth, CA), a manufacturer of power control products and systems, introduced its next-generation, modular ac-dc power supply, the MM5 Series, which provides 8.7 W/in³ of power density at high efficiencies of 80% to 87% at full load. The five-slot MM5 Series provides 900 W/1,200 W output power in a compact package of 2.5 in x 5 in x 11 in). The MM5 is suitable for telecom, computer and industrial designs as well as medical applications.

The MM5 has a power rating of 900 W through the full 85 Vac to 264 Vac input range, and 1,200 W with a 180 Vac to 264 Vac input. The power supply provides from one to five outputs ranging from 1 V to 60 V with no minimum load requirements, and provides output combinations that meet all international and safety emission requirements. A standby output of 5 V at 2 A is provided along with single-wire active current sharing necessary for paralleling output modules. The output voltage will deviate by less than 3% for a 25% to 75% step change in load current, and will fully recover in under 500 µsec. The output voltage of each module can be adjusted ±10% with internal potentiometer or external programming voltage.

The MM5 Series is the first of a complete line of new modular ac/dc power supplies. Future models will offer more slots, multiple-output modules, as well as specialty modules with options for battery chargers. Evaluation units of the new supplies are available in two weeks, with production quantities available four weeks ARO. Pricing for the MM5 Series ranges from $615 in OEM quantities.
