LTC Presents LTC4100 Battery Charger Controller

October 23, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (LTC, Milpitas, CA) introduced the LTC4100, a precision smart battery charger controller that operates with or without a host microcontroller. The LTC4100 operates independent of a host IC and reduces design time and complexity by eliminating the need for writing and debugging firmware. The IC is 100% compliant with Rev. 1.1 SMBus specifications and meets the requirements of Smart Battery System Level 2 charging functions.

The LTC4100 charges 6.4V to 26V, multiple-cell, lithium-ion and nickel-chemistry batteries at up to 4A with 0.8% voltage accuracy and 5% current accuracy, respectively. Synchronous switching operation provides high efficiency constant-current/constant-voltage charging from a wide input supply voltage range of 6V to 28V. The LTC4100 is housed in a small, 24-pin SSOP and is suitable for use in portable computers and instruments, RAID systems, and battery backup in telecom equipment.

The LTC4100 is rated for operation from -40°C to +85°C. Pricing starts at $5 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
