LTC Offers New LT3461/A DC/DC Converter

October 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (LTC, Milpitas, CA) announced the LT3461/A, a 1.3/3MHz, step-up, dc/dc converter that combines an internal 40V, 300mA switch with an onboard Schottky diode and soft-start capability all packaged in a ThinSOT™. Using a constant-frequency and current-mode architecture, the LT3461/A operates from an input-voltage range of 2.5V to 16V, making it suitable for single-cell, lithium-ion, and 5V or 12V applications.

The devices internal 40V switch enables boost converters with outputs up to 38V as well as SEPIC and flyback designs. An on-chip Schottky diode saves both the size and cost of an external diode. The integrated soft-start eliminates high inrush current. Its constant switching frequency of 1.3MHz or 3MHz enables low noise operation and tiny, low-cost, ceramic capacitors and inductors. The LT3461/A incorporates a low VCESAT (260mV) 300mA switch to deliver efficiencies as high as 84%. Quiescent current is only 2.8mA during operation and less than 1µA in shutdown.

The LT3461/AES6 is available from stock in a six-lead, ThinSOT package. Pricing starts at $1.65 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
