Lenovo and Navitas Deliver 90W GaN-Powered Fast Charger

August 09, 2020 by Stephanie Leonida

Lenovo and Navitas come together in another partnership, but this time GaN-powered fast charging is the name of the game.

Navitas Semiconductor is world-leading providers of high-speed power electronics devices that are designed to meet the needs of energy-demanding power systems of the future. Navitas and one of the world’s leading technology companies, Lenovo, announced the release of what the two companies consider the fastest and most powerful gallium nitride (GaN)-powered charger for professional tournament organizer, Legion e-sports

Lenovo leverages Navitas’ cutting-edge GaNFast power integrated circuits (ICs) to provide ultra-fast charging to power every Legion phone. Both Navitas and Lenovo announced the launch of the 90W legion fast charger’s entry into mass production and “in-box” supply with every legion phone.

Achieving Efficiency Using GaN Power

The combination of gallium and nitride to create GaN is a powerful combination. GaN is a “wide band gap” semiconductor material. Power systems of the past were often heavy, inefficient, and costly. Poor design efficiency can waste massive amounts of power. With this regard, it is worth noting that Navitas is the Latin word for “energy”, which fits the focus of the company, who aim to increase energy savings as well as pushing forward the GaN revolution for power electronics. With GaN technology, Navitas is able to increase energy savings by 40%.

Fast and efficient GaN powered devices created by Navitas are an attractive replacement to silicon-based ones, not only for efficiency but for cost-reduction. The higher switching speeds capable with GaN over silicon enable the reduction of passive components, further reducing costs in a more robust, but powerful device.

The 90W GanFast Legion Charger

The new charger measures only 66 x 62 x 28mm (115 cc) and provides avid gamers with a formidable fast charge capability. The charger is able to charge a 5,000mAh battery to 100% in only 30 minutes. As well as being able to run 20x faster than silicon-based chargers, the GanFast charger improves power 3-fold and so increases charging speed all the while being smaller and more compact than its silicon competitors. The new charger features a dual-liquid, mid-thermal, floating cooling system to distribute heat evenly, which allows for greater run time.

Mr. Jin CHEN, General Manager of the Cell Phone Business Department of Lenovo China, expressed his admiration for the “revolutionary influence” of Navitas’ GaN technology and believes the long-anticipated partnership between Lenovo and Navitas will favor the development of new technological possibilities.

“It is a great honor for Navitas Semiconductor to provide GaNFast power ICs for Lenovo, to help Lenovo improve user experience and technological innovation,” Yingying (Charles) ZHA, VP & General Manager of Navitas China said in the same news release.
