Lambda Offers Digitally-Controlled AC-DC Power Supplies

New Products Mar 19, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

Lambda announced a new range of digitally-controlled modules, expanding its NV-POWER family of configurable ac-dc power supplies, which are said to enable increased power output of up to 1450W peak rating for 10 seconds. The new modules target what is described as the increasing demand for 1U high configurable power solutions above 1000W in broadcast, instrumentation and medical markets, and other applications, such as ATE, automation, routers and servers, and security networks.

The modules incorporate what are described as many innovative design features including a new integrated magnetics transformer that allows for small size and increased efficiency. The digital control allows customisations based on the application’s requirements (such as modified current limit or start-up characteristics). Additionally, input to output isolation meets the 4kVAC reinforced requirement for medical use.

NV-Power employs an 8-bit microcontroller to handle housekeeping routines, replacing the array of comparators, op amps and other discrete components used in less integrated designs. This is said to bring a 50% parts count reduction which in turn allows 40% more board space for power components. With the high peak power rating designers can realise power densities of up to 19W/in3 from a 1U unit measuring 125 by 250mm.

The NV-350 range offers up to 600W continuous output power (750W peak for 10 seconds) from up to six configurable outputs. Proprietary Multi Resonant Topology (MRT) and other EMC improving design features give curve B EMC performance with earth leakage current less than 300uA at 264VAC, 63Hz (meeting the requirement for IEC/EN/UL60601-1).

The NV-700 range offers up to 1150W continuous output power (1450W peak for 10 seconds) from up to eight configurable outputs. Of particular note, the new, digitally controlled single-output ‘C’ module is three slots wide and available with 12, 15 and 24V outputs offering 450W continuous and 600W peak power for up to ten seconds. Each module features output good and inhibit signals with the power supply offering low leakage current and EN55011/55022 curve B EMC as standard.

Outputs covering the 3.2 to 64V range are available as well as 5V/2A and 12V/1A ATX compatible standby outputs. NV-Power employs Multiple Efficiency Gain (MEG) technology to produce an efficiency of up to 90% depending upon the configuration.

All products in the NV-Power range are approved to IEC/EN/UL 60950-1 for general purpose applications as well as IEC/EN/UL 60601-1 for medical applications, and IEC/EN 61010-1 for laboratory and process control applications, and carry the CE mark.
