KEMET Expands High-Voltage Surface MLCC Portfolio

December 15, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

KEMET Corp. has successfully developed several new part types with industry-leading and first-to-market capacitance values that offer both high-voltage capability and the stability and performance of C0G dielectric. Capacitance offerings are now more than four-times greater in devices with voltage ratings of 500- to 3,000-Vdc in EIA 0805–2225 case sizes. These increased CV values offer optimization and downsizing opportunities, and are also a replacement choice to other dielectric technologies that are not environmentally green or robust enough to withstand Pb-free surface mount processing.

"KEMET's High-Voltage C0G capacitors exhibit high insulation resistance, high breakdown strengths, low loss and low ESR at high frequencies for use as snubbers or filters in applications such as switching power supplies and lighting ballasts," said John Powers, KEMET Vice President, Ceramic Products. "Exceptional performance and reliability makes these High Voltage MLCCs the preferred dielectric choice of design engineers worldwide," continued Powers.

High-voltage surface-mount MLCCs in C0G dielectric feature a 125 degree Celsius maximum operating temperature and are considered extremely stable. The C0G dielectric exhibits no change in capacitance with respect to time and voltage, and boasts a negligible change in capacitance with reference to ambient temperature. In compliance with RoHS legislation, KEMET is offering these products with 100% pure matte tin-plated terminations which allow for excellent solderability.

Automotive Grade is available for applications requiring proven, reliable performance in harsh environments. Whether under-hood or in-cabin, these capacitors are designed for mission and safety critical automotive circuits. Stricter testing protocols and inspection criteria have been established for automotive grade products in recognition of potentially harsh environmental conditions. KEMET Automotive Grade series capacitors meet the demanding Automotive Electronics Council's AEC-Q200 qualification requirements.

Target markets include alternative energy, computer/consumer, industrial/lighting, medical, telecommunications, transportation, defense and aerospace. Typical applications include switch mode power supplies (including input filters, resonators, tank circuits, snubber circuits and output filters), high-voltage coupling and dc blocking, lighting ballasts, voltage multiplier circuits, dc-dc converters and coupling capacitors in Cuk converters.
