Intersil Unveils ISL6247 CPU Core Regulator

June 19, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the ISL6247, a multi-phase, synchronous buck, pulse-width modulated (PWM) controller with six-bit VID input optimized for Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 processors on 852PM and GME chip-set platforms. The CPUs and chip sets, combined with the new Intersil Endura™ power management solution, bring high performance and extended battery life to new transportable notebook PCs running at speeds up to 3.06GHz.

The ISL6247 utilizes smart voltage regulation technology and includes a six-bit, digital-to-analog converter that enables dynamic adjustment of core voltages ranging from 0.8375V to 1.6V in 12.5mV steps. The ISL6247 includes a thermal monitor, which sends a signal to the microprocessor to reduce the load before power system components exceed the maximum thermal limits.

The ISL6247 supports loss-less DCR, precision resistive, or low-cost loss-less Rds(on) current sensing methods. It also provides a selectable channel switching frequency ranging from 200kHz to 1MHz. Solution voltage accuracy is ±0.6% guaranteed over temperature. The device comes in a near-chip-scale, 40-pad, 6mm x 6mm, quad-flat no-lead (QFN) package.

The ISL6247CR and ISL6247CRZ (lead-free) are available now. Pricing for 1,000-unit quantities is $5.00 for the ISL6247CR and $5.50 for the ISL6247CRZ. Both ICs are available on tape and reel. The ISL6247EVAL evaluation platform is also available now.
