Falcon Electric Unveils New Rack Version of Scalable UPS with Optional Long-Life Batteries

April 06, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Falcon Electric, Inc. announced the next product line in its series of scalable and N+1 redundant power protection for growing computer network, laboratory, factory and automated production facilities. The new FN Series® double-conversion on-line Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) rackmount version gives users the choice of scaling from 3 to 40kVA with a 3U-high transformer module as well as compact 2 and 3U modules for power and batteries.

In addition, Falcon Electric now offers an optional long-life battery which it says is rated to last twice as long as the standard five-year battery used by virtually all UPS suppliers. According to the company, this upgrade will enable users to significantly reduce maintenance intervals and their associated costs. The company states that the savings generated from lower maintenance translates to a lower overall cost of ownership, compared to other on-line and modular UPS products in the same size range currently available.

"The FN Series UPS Plus is receiving great feedback from customers in the industrial sector, as well as many network and data center users, due to its flexibility and standard features, which are options in competing systems," stated Paul Newman, Falcon’s Vice President of Manufacturing. "We’re also excited about offering long-life batteries, which will give our users the ability to reduce the time and money spent on replacement batteries for a long time."

"The more elegant and streamlined package is targeted at users that deploy network and IT gear in more extreme environments, such as the U.S. military and major defense contractors, as well as a broad range of industrial users. A typical user has installed several of the ’tower of power’ redundant UPSs, which all of the major UPS vendors offer, only to find that this exact functionality can be achieved by simply adding multiple UPSs in a parallel configuration," added Newman. "These outdated redundant UPSs cost more than our system and, with multiple power, battery and intelligence modules, incorporate a cumbersome and costly design associated with the days of analog circuits. The sheer speed DSP technology has eliminated the need to overlap multiple circuits."

The scalable platform parallel or N+1 redundant UPSs are designed to meet these extreme demands. The new FN Series rackmount models achieve many technical milestones, including an exponentially faster processor utilizing digital signal processing (DSP) technology. An FN system can be configured using individual 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10kVA models, providing up to 40kVA capacity. For N+1 redundant operation, the capacity scales up to 30kVA.

The new FN models also include a Remote Emergency Power Off (REPO) interface and an LCD display with advanced monitoring for quick and easy UPS management. The 3, 4, 5 and 6kVA sizes carry UL and CE listings; the 8kVA and 10kVA model are CE listed.

Available now, the new FN Series UPS Plus rackmount models are designed to UL and cUL standards and meet FCC Class A requirements. List pricing starts at $4,189.00 for the 208/220V 3kVA model with 10-year rated batteries.
