Fairchild Simplifies Under 200W Appliance Inverter Designs

January 11, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor's two new Motion-SPM™ devices for under 200W inverter motors are specifically tailored to reduce board space and simplify designs. Each FCBS0550 (500V/5A) and FCBS0650 (500V/6A) Motion-SPM integrates six MOSFETs, three high-voltage ICs (HVICs) and one low-voltage IC (LVIC) into a single, compact thermally efficient module.

Compared to discrete designs requiring multiple components, the new Motion-SPM reduces total board size by 20% in inverter motor designs for refrigerators. This integration leads to simpler and faster designs as well as highly reliable and efficient systems. Unlike competitive devices, Fairchild's FCBS0650 and FCBS0550 are UL-certified, which satisfies basic creepage and clearance spacing requirements.

"Fairchild designed its integrated Motion-SPM for under 200W inverter motors to utilize a MOSFET as a switching device," said Taehoon Kim, vice president of Fairchild's Functional Power Group. "The result is a module with a structure compact enough to achieve cost-effectiveness in low-power applications while offering system efficiency and reliability. These new Motion-SPM devices demonstrate how Fairchild intentionally designs products to meet the requirements of specific applications."

Additional system benefits of the FCBS0550 and FCBS0650 include: Internal MOSFET with short-circuit withstanding capability improves ruggedness; The MOSFET's body-diode exhibits soft-recovery behavior and low conduction loss to increase efficiency and reduce noise; Built-in HVIC/LVIC offer high noise immunity and protection functions; High-side Control circuit under-voltage (UV) protection (without fault signal output); Low-side UV and short-circuit (SC) protection through external shunt resistor (with fault signal output); Single-grounded power supply due to built-in HVIC simplifies designs; Ceramic substrate's 2500Vrms/min isolation voltage rating and very low leakage current improve safety; and Divided negative DC-link terminals for inverter current sensing applications increase design flexibility.

The FCBS0650 and FCBS0550 are available in a ceramic-based (44 mm x 26.8 mm) Mini-DIP package. These lead (Pb)-free products meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and are compliant with the European Union requirements now in effect.

In lots of 100 pieces, pricing is: $10.80 for the FCBS0550 (500V/5A) and $12.00 for the FCBS0650 (500V/6A). Samples are currently available with production quantities available 12 weeks ARO.
