Ericsson Introduces New DC/DC Power Modules in PKL 4000 Family

Ericsson Microelectronics (Sweden) introduced new high-current dc/dc power modules that extend the PKL 4000 family. The 1.8V, 60A PKL4118 PIT and 1.8V, 50A PKL4918 PIT models offer efficiency of up to 87 percent at 60A. At 37.2W per cubic inch, Ericsson claims that these converters offer double the power density of other half-brick modules. The new modules are capable of handling input voltages ranging from 36 to 75V and provide 1,500Vdc isolation voltage.

The hot-pluggable PKL 4000 Series uses synchronous rectification, planar magnetics and low-resistivity PCB. Extensive thermal design keeps the output MOSFETs at less than 10 degrees C above the baseplate temperature. The PKL 4000 family does not require series diodes for parallel operation.

The industry-standard half-brick format has been altered in the new modules with two additional output pins to handle the increased current capability. All other pin assignments are industry-standard compatible. The package measures 2.4" x 2.4" x 0.5".

The PKL 4000 Series is short-circuit-proof and includes built-in over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature protection. It also has a soft-start, remote turn-on, output adjustment and remote sensing, in addition to UL 1950 recognition and compliance with EN60950.

The 500-piece price of the released PKL 4118 PIT is $154, while the PKL 4918 PIT is $144. Samples of both models are available from stock.
