Ericsson Expands POLA Series Point-of-Load Regulators
Ericsson Power Modules (Sweden) has expanded its interoperable POLA™ Series of point-of-load (POL) regulators with an additional 17 products all intended for use in distributed power architectures. Offering secure sourcing and commonality of product specifications for ease of purchasing, three POL platforms have been introduced. For use in different application areas, the product platforms embrace current ratings from 6 A to 60 A, and most products are available with 3.3 V, 5 V and 12 V input capability.
The products are aimed at OEM and CEM customers with applications in communications, avionics, industrial and medical equipment. The regulators provide a good fit with customers demanding multiple sources and design flexibility due to the number of vendors providing the same products within the Point Of Load Alliance (POLA). Designed for use in applications with DDR and QDR memory chips where a tightly controlled termination voltage is needed, nine new regulators are able to generate a termination voltage with a ±40 mV tolerance compared with the reference VDDQ. The DDR/QDR Series of POL regulators is available in three different power levels; the PME-V for 6 A, the PMF-V for 10 A and the PMG-V for 15 A versions. All are available in through-hole and surface-mount versions.
By maximizing power density to enable a minimized footprint, six single in-line (SIP) products for 8 A (the PMK) and 18 A (the PML) have been introduced. Equipped with the aforementioned input voltages, all versions can set the output voltage to any value between 0.8 V and 5.5 V. The PMM family of products is available in two input-voltage variants of 3.0 V to 5.5 V and 8 Vin to 14 Vin. The parts can deliver up to 60 A of output current with an efficiency peak of 96%. The output voltage can be externally configured by a chip resistor to any value between 0.8 V and 5.5 V. The regulators are available in both through-hole and surface-mount versions.
The PMM regulators use a three-phase design for optimum performance. For tight voltage control, the regulators utilize a differential output sense feature. The platform is offers a high power density combined with a high-efficiency figure of 96%. Advanced features include power sequencing via an auto-track control, capability to start up into a pre-biased output, wide adjustment range, thermal shutdown, output sense and inhibit control.
