August 22, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

EnerSys Inc. (Reading, PA), formerly Yuasa Inc., has introduced a new battery that is claimed to provide 25 percent greater power output, or 5Ah, in the same footprint as industry-standard 4Ah batteries.

The new rechargeable NP5-12, designed for security system and electronics applications, is a sealed lead-acid battery with an energy density of 1.54Wh per cubic inch at the 20-hour rate. It has a nominal voltage of 12V. Rated capacities for the NP5-12 range from 0.25A to 10.5V, 5.0Ah at the 20-hour rate and from 3.00A to 9.60V, 3.0Ah at the one-hour rate. The battery weighs less than 5lb, is housed in ABS Resin, and has a life expectancy of up to five years in standby use and up to 1,200 cycles in cyclic use. The battery also features quick-disconnect terminals.

The NP5-12 can be operated in any position without leakage. An optional flame-retardant container and cover are available for the NP5-12 to further ensure safety. Pricing for the NP5-12 starts at $25 each. Delivery ranges from stock to four weeks ARO, depending on quantity.
