Emerson Network Power Releases New Configurable Power Supply

September 29, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Emerson Network Power is encouraging design engineers to "go configurable, not custom" with its new ac-dc power supply. The µMP1 (MicroMP1) extends the company’s line of configurable power supplies, providing what the company says is market-leading density, efficiency, reliability and certifications, at a cost that rivals non-configurable power supplies while providing the flexibility that can eliminate the need for a custom solution in many scenarios.

The low-profile 1U (1.57 inch; 39.89 mm) Emerson Network Power µMP1has six available expansion slots, allowing engineers to mix-and-match modules for up to 12 outputs ranging from 0.9 to 60V. It offers a power density of 13.9W per cubic inch and operating efficiency of up to 91% typical at full case load. The case can deliver up to 1,200W of output power with no minimum load requirement. The µMP1 accepts a wide input voltage range of 85 to 264Vac and is equipped with active power factor correction rated at 0.99 typical to minimize input harmonic current distortion.

Designed to ensure high efficiency and reliability - even in extreme environmental conditions - the power supply is rated for performance at temperatures from minus 40 to 70°C. It can withstand a shock/vibration of more than 50 G, contributing to a high demonstrated mean-time between failures of more than 550,000 hours at full load. Conformal coating is also available as an option. In addition, the µMP1 is equipped with full EN60601 medical safety approvals, making it ideal for certain medical applications, as well as industrial, process automation, robotics and telecommunications.

Microcontrollers integrated into the case are supported by Emerson Network Power’s intuitive GUI-based PMBus® control software, which can be downloaded free from the company’s web site. The software is said to provide OEMs with superior flexibility, including real-time input voltage, current and temperature monitoring to provide at-a-glance performance confirmation for the entire power supply.

The µMP1 is pre-certified with a host of safety specifications – including UL, CSA, VDE, BABT, BSMI, CB, and CE certifications - to ensure rapid, cost-effective power provisioning off-the-shelf and enable shorter design-to-manufacture timelines. The power supply also meets EMI Class B and EN61000 standards for conducted noise and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives.

The µMP1 is available now, with pricing dependent on configuration.
